Not Bad for a Sunday Night

Sylvan Esso and Tune-Yards at Webster Hall.

No justice being done here to Sylvan Esso - too far away and WAY too dark (I hear they fixed the lighting for the second night), but you can almost get a sense of Amelia's platform high tops and her moves.  Be assured: Amelia and Nick brought it.  Brought. It.

Tune-Yards with special guests Roomful of Teeth.  There was much rejoicing in the land.

9/02/10

As in 90210.  Yup.

Here's a celebration of the auspicious (?) date, courtesy the good people at Go Fug Yourself.  There's a whole rabbit hole there devoted to the event if you want to jump in.

Yes, that was yesterday.  And no, I didn't catch it then.  And it's pretty likely that I would never have caught it if it weren't for Sherin.  What does this prove?  I don't think very much, other than that I am probably not a girl.

Brancusi, etc.

This one is pretty much for Cory. Like much of my life, it'll seem a little random, but has an underlying logic. Or something.

Their Shirts

Before I go on to describe the amazingness that was the headline act of the Hanukkah shows, I feel a responsibility to report on the garb worn by The Magnetic Fields. Being that I'm a fashion maven these days and all. They all had on shirts with the names of famous Art Film Directors done up in fonts associated with heavy metal bands. To wit, Stephin Merritt wore a cotton shoutout to Werner Fassbinder:

Now, perhaps I shouldn't admit that I've never seen Berlin Alexanderplatz, but I lose no props admitting that I know Metallica lettering when I see it, do I?

The rest of the band was rounded out by homages to Ingmar Bergman (Iron Maiden), De Palma (Def Leppard), and Ozu (Ozzy Osbourne, natch).

'Twas then a bit ironic that it was so wintery, even in the club, that they had to wear said shirts under jackets and over sweatshirts; but wear them they did, and for that they're due Collective Fashion Credit.

retro chic

For today's post, I am shamelessly stealing from my sister, who posted this photo of our family circa, what? 1970-something...

Mom and Dad were really young, Lori's hair was in a bizarre and mercifully temporary phase of Jimi Hendrix weirdness, and I am wearing... Well, the way my not-quite-3-yr-old niece put it was "nice pants, dude." The way I put it is that my outfit is simultaneously insanely out of date, yet could be found stitch-for-stitch on a Williamsburg hipster this weekend. And the way the gal in the next cubicle put it is "You look like Beck."

Hehehe.

Thursday? It's Thursday?!

Ok, it's been a little crazy, and the days melt together just a bit...

But there has been fun to be had amongst the madness. So, for a little bit of each:

  • In the last couple days, i found out that it's incredibly hard to find a swim suit this time of year. Even for a guy, even (especially?) in new york, they run out of all useful sizes by august.

  • Last night was about 2 things: laundry, and hard cider. A friend brought some direct from london and gave me a couple strongbows. Not a 'drinking' night, as such, but i had one with dinner.

  • Today, i had lunch with my oldest friend, and we spent almost the whole time doing the new york times crossword puzzle (yesterday's and today's). Which was actually kind of wonderful...

And in case you might be interested in such things... i came across this photo from i'm guessing 2nd grade:

Hehehe. Gotta love the ol' 44! Points for the folks who know why that number's important...

reblog

As i (mis?)understand it, a proper reblog is actually automatic: a way to edit and curate content from other blogs/sites. Well, this ain't that. I just wanted to draw your attention to a few things out there on the interweb:

Firstly, jqln has a brilliant link to the hip hop stylings of mc rove. Plus, she needs your support for her lemonade and molasses fast.

Then, there's the online version of juxtapoz, which is a rad and accessible art/culture mag.

And finally, to celebrate my current temp post as glorified envelope stuffer for the fashion industry, here's go fug yourself, which is a funny and catty look at celebrity fashion missteps.

Happy monday.
